I co-wrote this poetry collection with my daughter Hannah in 2017. Whether the enticing confusion of young love or harsh realities of the school-to-prison pipeline, we capture a vast range of thoughts & feelings describing the collective life of America's modern day youth.
See below for reviews, teasers, and excerpts.
A hard-hitting poem about the high price of modern-day adolescence.
A poetic treatise on the self-perpetuating cycle of going from school to prison in contemporary America.
A poetic glimpse into the visceral benefits of looking up, not down.
A poetic breakdown of the insatiable appetite of gentrification.
my grandma
used to talk about
when she met
my granddaddy -
what she said,
I forget,
but I'll always remember
the glow on her face when
she spoke...
I imagine
I looked the same
when you looked at me
in homeroom...
and if I were a poet,
I'd know just the words
to describe the feeling
of
your lips on mine
or
your fingers in my palm
and
maybe I could express
the way my heart
used to flutter
whenever I got a text from
you...
I guess
I could also explain
how it felt
when I saw
you
at the mall with
him.

I see
she
wears a blindfold,
holds a balance and sword,
is supposed to judge everyone
the same -
but
I know
those
of light complexion
get acquitted by perception,
while those of darker shade lose that
rigged game.

Mama says real love:
shared last names, not leases -
rings, not roommates.

Jabari called it
the sun,
Braxton said it's like
the moon -
they're half-right...
Chloe's smile
is
the glow of the morning star,
delicate,
timeless,
like a diamond...
Chloe's smile
is
as strong as
the promises the sun streaks
across the sky,
decorating
the dark heavenly canvas
left empty as
the soft waning crescent
fades into
the shadows...
Chloe's smile
is
not the similes, the metaphors,
it's
not the parts -
it's
the whole,
the quiet, powerful poetry of
the dawn.
